How to register a new baby with a GP in Havering
Step-by-step guide to registering your newborn with a GP surgery in Havering — what you need, when to do it, and how the process works.
When to register your baby
You should register your baby with a GP as soon as possible after birth — ideally within the first few days. This ensures:
- Your baby can access healthcare quickly if needed
- The 6–8 week check can be booked on time
- Vaccinations can be scheduled
- Your baby's NHS record is created
You don't need to wait for the birth certificate to register with a GP.
You don't need a birth certificate
GP registration and civil birth registration are separate processes. Your baby can be registered with a GP before their birth is registered at the registry office.
What you need to register your baby
To register your baby with Abbamoor, you'll need:
- Your baby's name (first and last)
- Date of birth
- NHS number (if you have it from the hospital — if not, we can look it up)
- Your details (as the parent/guardian)
- Address
You don't need:
- Birth certificate (though it's helpful)
- Passport or ID for the baby
- Proof of address in the baby's name
How to register
Option 1: Online registration (fastest)
Use our online registration form. It takes about 5–10 minutes:
- Go to our registration page
- Select "I'm registering on behalf of a child"
- Fill in your baby's details
- Submit the form
We'll process the registration within a few working days and send you confirmation.
Option 2: Register in person
Visit the surgery with your baby:
- Ask reception for a new patient registration form
- Fill it in (you can take it home if needed)
- Return it to reception
What happens next
Once registered:
- You'll receive an NHS number for your baby (if they don't already have one)
- We'll book the 6–8 week check — this includes vaccinations
- You'll be invited for your baby's first vaccinations at 8 weeks
- Your red book (Personal Child Health Record) will be updated
If you're already registered with us
If you're already a patient at Abbamoor, the process is simpler. Just let us know you've had a baby and we can add them to your family record. You can:
- Tell the receptionist
- Use our online request form
- Mention it at your postnatal check
Changing GP surgeries
Some family members can be registered at a different practice if needed.
However, all babies must be registered at the same practice as their primary parent or guardian.
What if my baby needs to see a GP urgently?
If your baby needs medical attention before they're registered:
- In an emergency: Call 999 or go to A&E
- Urgent but not emergency: Call NHS 111
- GP appointment: Any GP can see a baby who isn't yet registered — just explain the situation
Don't delay seeking medical help because you haven't registered yet.
Frequently asked questions
Can I register my baby before they're born?
No, you need to wait until after the birth. But you can prepare by finding out how to register at your chosen GP surgery.
What if I had a home birth?
The process is the same. Your midwife will give you information about registering with a GP before they leave after the birth.
Do both parents need to be registered at the same practice?
No. Parents can be registered at different practices, and the baby can be registered at either (or a completely different one).
What if I move house?
If you move within Havering, you can stay registered with us. If you move outside our catchment area, you'll need to register with a new GP closer to your new home.
