What BMI do I need for weight loss medication on the NHS?
BMI is one of the key eligibility criteria for NHS weight loss medication. Here's what the thresholds are, what else you need to qualify, and what to do if you're close but not quite there.
The short answer
For most NHS weight loss medication pathways, you need a BMI of 30 or above, plus at least one weight-related health condition. BMI alone is not enough.
NHS BMI categories
BMI alone isn't enough — you also need a health condition
The NHS requires you to have at least one of the following alongside a BMI of 30+:
Weight-related conditions that qualify
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Sleep apnoea
- Heart disease
If you're not sure whether you have any of these, your GP can check with a simple blood pressure reading and blood test.
What if I have type 2 diabetes?
Different criteria apply. GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Mounjaro are also licensed to treat type 2 diabetes, so your GP may be able to prescribe them directly if you meet the NHS clinical criteria for diabetic management. This is a separate pathway from the Oviva weight loss route.
What if my BMI is below 30?
NHS medication is generally not available below a BMI of 30. However, this doesn't mean there's no support available. Our health coaches and dietitians can work with you on sustainable lifestyle changes, and it's worth having a conversation with your GP if you have specific concerns.
Some private providers will prescribe with a lower BMI threshold, but these are not NHS-funded and involve out-of-pocket costs.
How do I find out my BMI?
Your BMI is calculated from your height and weight. You can calculate it using the NHS BMI calculator. It's worth noting that BMI has limitations — it doesn't account for muscle mass or where fat is distributed. Your GP may consider other factors alongside it.
What's the next step?
If you think you meet the criteria — BMI 30+ and at least one of the qualifying conditions — book an appointment with one of our Clinical Pharmacists. They will review your records and discuss whether an Oviva referral is appropriate.
