What is Oviva and how does it work?
Your GP may have mentioned Oviva when discussing weight loss medication. Here's what it actually is, what the programme involves, and how to get referred.
What is Oviva?
Oviva (opens in a new tab) provides NHS-funded specialist weight management programmes in parts of England. NHS access depends on where you live, the current local referral specification, and a clinical assessment.
Oviva is not a private company you pay for — when referred through your GP practice, it is free on the NHS.
What does the Oviva programme involve?
Oviva is a structured, app-based programme that combines:
- Dietary and lifestyle coaching from registered dietitians
- Regular check-ins and goal tracking via their app
- Access to GLP-1 medication (such as Wegovy) where clinically appropriate
- Ongoing monitoring throughout treatment
The programme runs for up to two years and is designed to support lasting behaviour change alongside any medication.
Who is eligible for an Oviva referral?
Typical criteria are not a guarantee
Oviva says its typical Tier 3 criteria include being aged 18 or over, a BMI of 35 or more, and a weight-related health condition, but it also states that BMI thresholds and availability vary locally. Your GP team must check the current criteria for your area. Some people use a lower adjusted BMI threshold because of their ethnic background.
If you have type 2 diabetes, your GP may be able to prescribe via a different route rather than referring to Oviva. Speak to your GP directly.
What happens after a referral?
Once referred, Oviva will contact you to complete an initial assessment. This is done through their app and may include questions about your health history, current medications, and lifestyle. If you are accepted onto the programme, a dietitian will work with you to set up your plan.
Medication is not guaranteed — Oviva will assess whether it is clinically appropriate for you as part of the programme.
How do I get referred from Abbamoor?
Ask the practice team whether Oviva or another specialist service is currently available and who should assess a referral. They will review your health record and the live local criteria.
If you are not registered with us, use the registration journey to check the current catchment before applying.
